Mack Appointed to State System Board of Governors

Senator White hails Indiana attorney’s confirmation

The State Senate today unanimously confirmed the nomination of noted local attorney Jonathan B. Mack to serve on the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), according to Senator Don White (R-41), a strong supporter of Mack's appointment.

The 20-member Board of Governors is responsible for planning and coordinating development and operation of the 14 state universities in PASSHE, including Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).

The Board establishes broad educational, fiscal and personnel policies, and oversees the efficient management of PASSHE. Among other tasks, the Board appoints the chancellor and university presidents, approves new academic programs, sets tuition and coordinates and approves the annual PASSHE operating budget.

"Jonathan currently serves on the IUP Board of Trustees. By virtue of his service on both boards, he will be a perfect liaison and advocate for IUP, befitting its status as the flagship university of the State System," Senator White said. "I was proud to support his confirmation and I am gratified it was unanimously supported by my colleagues.  Jonathan certainly represents a significant asset to both boards."

Mack joins fellow Indiana County resident Christine J. Toretti on the PASSHE Board at a time when the State System is experiencing continued growth in enrollment. Thirteen of the 14 state universities – including IUP -- posted record enrollments during the fall semester of 2009. Overall, a total of 116,935 full-time and part-time students are enrolled this fall.

IUP, with a total enrollment of 14,638, remains the largest university in the State System.

"Jonathan Mack has a demonstrated record of success as a leader and as a professional. I believe that he will bring a high level of stewardship and entrepreneurship to his role as a member of the State System Board of Governors," IUP President Dr. Tony Atwater said.

"With Christine and Jonathan serving on the Board of Governors, Indiana County and IUP will be served by two superbly capable representatives as the State System moves forward and enjoys the benefits and addresses the issues that come with this unprecedented growth," Senator White said.

Jonathan is a lifelong resident of Indiana County.  He is married to Kathleen, and has two children, Connor and Katie.
